Only last Wednesday an the Italian press were excitedly reporting the finding of 100 new works by Caravaggio in a workshop at Milan's Sforzesco Castle. The sketches, which were identified as belonging to the Italian master by experts at the Brescia Museum Foundation, are thought to be early productions, valued at £550m. However, art historians remain sceptical of the discovery. According to a report in The Independent, many find it hard to believe that such a large amount of work could have gone unnoticed for so long. Even non-experts are slightly surprised by the enormity of the find: 'We'll be very happy to discover it's true,' said Elena Conenna Milan's culture spokeswoman. 'But it's strange. They weren't in a hidden place, they were accessible to all.' Key to the Milanese researchers claims is that the treatment of anatomical features in the sketches is the same as one might see in Caravaggio's later works. However, critcs have taken issue with this conclusion. Professor Phillipe Daverio said, 'these sketches can't really be compared to anything', going on to posit that a consistent design or style does not exist in any of the old master's work. Another historian, Francesca Cappelletti, was more concise, arguing that these works were more indicative of the work of Petrzano, Caravaggio's master.
