What: Phillips upcoming fall auction of ‘New Now’ in New York on September 20, 2016.
Why: The auction will contain a selection of over 200 lots where 20 collectors will get an opportunity to acquire works from both emerging as well as established artists. The sale will feature a diverse range of works including a single-owner selection from the estate of esteemed economist and celebrated art collector Pentti Kouri. The highlights of the auction include:
— Up for auction is an untitled work from 2015 by artist Matt Connors. Nearly five feet in height, this impressive painting is the first major work from the Chicago-born artist to come under the hammer. His wide-reaching practice also expands to installation-based works and artists’ books. (Estimate: $30,000-40,000)
— The first lot of the sale will be opened by an artwork by Josh Kline titled ‘it’s clean, it’s natural, we promise,’ which was included in the artist’s first solo show at his representative gallery, 47 Canal, in 2011. (Estimate: $12,000-18,000)
—Also included in the September New Now auction is Louise Despont’s Sandglass, which was executed in 2012 (Illustrated left). Sandglass is the first work by the Brooklyn and Bali-based artist to come to the secondary market. (Estimate: $7,000-10,000)
—Giuseppe Penone’s Fingernail and Marble, 1988 is a pristine example of the renowned artist’s sculptural practice. Within the field of art history, Penone’s artwork has absorbed elements from Minimalism, Arte de Povera, and Land Art. His inspiration can be traced back to nature as a means of slow and gradual artistic construction that leads his artworks to possess a calming and meditative quality. (Estimate: $150,000-250,000)
—Infinity Nets, signed, titled and dated “Yayoi Kusama 2006,” will also be up for auction, accompanied by Yayoi Kusama’s Art Work Registration Card with dimensions of 18 x 21 in (45.7 x 53.3 cm) (Estimate: $70,000-100,000)
The auction features the works of artists such as Giuseppe Penone, Lawrence Weiner, Matt Connors, Josh Kline, and Louise Despont.
